National Call to Action on Cancer Prevention and Survivorship

Four former United States Surgeons General issued a National Call to Action on Cancer Prevention and Survivorship.  They called for greater education and investment in medical and community measures to prevent cancer, and in health care systems to improve survival rates and quality of life.  Richard Carmona, David Satcher, Jocelyn Elders and Antonia Novello were joined by champion cyclist and cancer survivor Lance Armstrong at a July 23, 2008 press conference to release the Call to Action.

“The war on cancer must start with prevention.  About half of all cancer cases are preventable,” declared Carmona.

The National Call to Action is a joint project of the Lance Armstrong Foundation and Canyon Ranch Institute, which is headed by Carmona.  Partnership for Prevention® contributed content and reviews of the report, which cites studies by Partnership’s National Commission on Prevention Priorities.
