Tommy Thompson Meets with Partnership Task Force

Former HHS Secretary Tommy Thompson met with Partnership’s Task Force on Promoting Aspirin Use to discuss the politics of prevention. Thompson said that the time is right to enact comprehensive prevention legislation. He said a “perfect storm” is brewing in health care that will result in increased attention to prevention. Rising healthcare costs are making it increasingly difficult for American businesses to compete; the number of uninsured continues to grow; fewer employers are providing insurance; and Medicare will begin running a deficit in the next 6 – 7 years. Thompson recommended that research demonstrating the value of prevention, such as Partnership’s recent study on the number of lives saved by increasing the use of preventive services, should be used as a tool to promote prevention among policymakers.
