FORUM HIGHLIGHTS LEADING BY EXAMPLE AND WORKFORCE HEALTH
Navistar CEO, Dan Ustian Shares Success Story

Washington, D.C. – January 19, 2007 - Innovations in worksite health took center stage today at the Health & Human Capital Management Congress in Washington, D.C.

In front of a full to capacity audience of business and health policy leaders, Partnership for Prevention President, John M. Clymer and Navistar International President and CEO Dan Ustian led a discussion on Partnership’s Leading by Example initiative on worksite health and Navistar’s own experience as a Leading by Example member working to implement such programs.

“It’s not just a program of the day or of the month”, said Mr. Ustian of Navistar’s Vital Lives initiative, which offers wellness programs, access to fitness centers, and other health resources for employees. “It is something that has to be built into the culture.”

“A healthy employee waistline equates to a healthy corporate bottom line,” said Partnership’s John M. Clymer. “The goal is to plug in employee health as a core element of an organization’s business strategy.

“The kinds of changes we’re talking about here, first in behavior and then in seeing a health benefit, take a while to register,” said Mr. Ustian, noting that a key challenge to any CEO is patience. “It can take two or three years for the benefits to occur, and CEOs don’t like to wait that long. But we should, and we have to.”

Partnership for Prevention’s Leading by Example initiative currently includes more than 30 company CEOs and state governors who have committed to embracing the core principles of employee health and concrete steps within their organizations.

Navistar’s Healthy Lives program has helped the company keep health costs relatively constant for the past several years, despite inflation. Currently 70-percent of Navistar employees participate in the Healthy Lives program in some way.
