US Preventive Services Task Force Recommendation
The USPSTF is currently updating its recommendation for this service. In 1996, it recommended counseling parents of young children (ages 0-4) on measures to prevent injuries, including motor vehicle injuries, drowning, poisoning, fire/burns, and falls.

FACTS:

Each year, hundreds of children age 4 and younger die from preventable injuries:

  • More than 500 die in motor vehicle crashes
  • More than 400 die as a result of accidental drowning
  • About 200 die as a result of exposure to smoke and fire

This service's technical report will be released at a later date. Each service's technical report includes details on the literature used and approach taken to estimate this service's health impact and cost effectiveness.
